These are the rules we hold ourselves to. They exist so that athletes, families, coaches, and athletic departments know what to expect from us before they deal with us.
Reporting
We attend the events we cover. When we write about something we did not witness, we say where the information came from.
We identify ourselves as FRSN before conducting an interview. We do not record conversations without telling the person we are recording.
Quotes are printed as spoken, trimmed only for length and never in a way that changes meaning.
Covering minors
Most of the athletes we cover are under eighteen, and that changes how we work.
- We identify high school athletes by name and school in the context of competition, which is standard practice for sports reporting.
- We do not publish home addresses, class schedules, personal contact details, or social media handles of minors.
- We do not pursue stories about a minor athlete’s medical information, academic standing, or family circumstances unless the athlete or their guardian raises it and agrees to its publication.
- Any athlete or guardian can ask us to remove a photograph of them. We will, without requiring a reason.
Photography
Every image is shot by our staff at the event shown. Photos are not staged, and we do not alter content: colour, exposure, and cropping only.
Photographs of injuries, medical treatment, or athletes in visible distress are published only when the moment is central to the story, and never for their own sake.
Galleries exist so families can see a season documented. If a photograph should not be online, tell us and it comes down.
Independence
No school, athletic department, coach, league, sponsor, or advertiser reviews our coverage before publication or influences what we choose to cover.
We do not pay for access and we do not accept gifts, meals, or travel from the programs we cover beyond standard press box provisions.
Advertising and sponsorship are sold separately from editorial and have no bearing on coverage decisions. Anything paid for is labelled.
Conflicts of interest
Staff disclose any relationship with a program they cover: attendance, employment, coaching, family members competing. Where a conflict cannot be avoided, it is disclosed in the story.
Corrections
We correct errors quickly and visibly. A corrected story carries a dated note at the bottom stating what was wrong and what changed. We do not quietly edit and move on, and we do not delete stories to make an error disappear.

Artificial intelligence
We do not publish AI-generated imagery as journalism. Every photograph is taken by a person.
We do use AI tools in the writing process, for research, drafting and editing. They don’t report. Every name, score, statistic and quote is verified by a person against a primary source before publication, and no quote appears unless someone at FRSN heard it or sourced it from a named outlet. A human editor reads, revises and approves every story that runs, and is accountable for it.
