No. 15 Colorado beat Iowa State 1-0 Thursday at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa, in the Big 12 opener for both teams, with the Buffaloes improving to 7-1-1 on the season while Iowa State fell to 4-3-2.
A foul call on the edge of the box in the 40th minute resulted in a Colorado penalty kick, and senior Reagan Kotschau converted just past the outstretched arm of Iowa State goalkeeper Eme McClenahan to give the Buffaloes the game-winner. Colorado held the lead 1-0 at halftime.
Colorado held the shots advantage, 13-8, as well as the edge in corner kicks, 4-0. Brooke Goerish collected the clean sheet for Colorado, snatching three saves in the win. McClenahan played the full 90 minutes from the net for Iowa State, collecting six saves. The Cyclones recorded five shots in the second half, with the best opportunity coming in the 85th minute when Cassidy Corcione sent a rocket from outside the box toward the net, only to have Goerish just get a hand on it to knock it off the crossbar, and the rebound found Sophie Forrester in front of the net, but a wide shot ended the threat.
Colorado’s attack was spearheaded by Kotschau, as the team captain registered a game-high five shots, placing three on goal. Three Cyclones had a pair of shots as Morgan Goodman, Cassidy Corcione and Izzy Kapanke led the way for Iowa State, with three of ISU’s eight total shots coming on target.
Iowa State travels to Houston on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. Colorado hosts West Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in Boulder.
